Fat for Fuel was written by Joseph Mercola, a leader in the holistic and natural medicine world. I have been following Dr. Mercola’s website and work for over a year after hearing his interview with Ben Greenfield. He is a huge proponent of holistic, natural medicine. I give his book a 10 out of 10 on content, readability, and style. His book is great whether you are a scientist or have zero background in science.
Fat for Fuel is a specialized ketogenic diet that focuses on improving mitochondrial health. He calls it Mitochondrial Metabolic Therapy (MMT). Basically, it is a diet that is designed to optimize your body’s mitochondria (the energy producing organelles in your cells) and restore your body’s metabolic flexibility. By following MMT, your body will have the ability to seamlessly shift from burning glucose (carbs) as its primary energy source to burning fat for energy.
The book is filled with the scientific mechanisms of how your body operates and uses various foods to produce energy. It is obvious that Dr. Mercola leaves no stone unturned in his research. His explanations were very helpful to me especially since I do not have a medical or nutritional background. I appreciate his explanations.
In addition to his detailed explanations of why MMT is great for you and how to implement it, he dedicates chapters of the book to fasting, exercise, supplements and MMT tools.
